What Kansas Winters and Clay Soil Do to Courts and Tracks

Freezing water and moving soil both open cracks in Kansas courts and tracks. NOAA normals put Wichita at or below 32°F on about 103 nights a year and Goodland on about 157. When water trapped in a hairline crack freezes, it expands and pushes the crack wider. The ground can shift as well. The Kansas Geological Survey notes that expansive soils, common where clay deposits lie underneath, heave and shrink from season to season. A base that keeps moving can send an old crack back up through a brand-new coating, which contractors call reflective cracking.

On Kansas courts, our crews treat those cracks using the ARMOR Crack Repair System. When the base shifts, the ARMOR membrane is built to absorb the movement rather than pass it straight back up to the surface. Crews can lay roughly 300 linear feet in a day, so heavy cracking adds days to a job.

Temperature also decides when a crew can coat.

“We can’t install coatings below 60 degrees or on damp surfaces. For northern states, that means work windows are much shorter, mainly summer.”

Acrylic court coatings also need an overnight low of 60°F or higher. NOAA normals show about 253 Wichita nights a year falling to 60°F or colder, and a normal low of 60°F or higher only from late May to mid-September. In Goodland, that window runs only from July 1 to August 16. May and June, the two wettest months in Wichita and Topeka, can add rain delays.

Tennis Court Resurfacing and Repair in Kansas

We take on tennis court resurfacing and repair across Kansas. Our crews worked on the new tennis courts at Hays High School and on Sabetha’s city courts. In Lawrence, our Prairie Park and Holcomb Park jobs covered courts for both tennis and basketball, and the City of Hutchinson brought us in for its fairground courts. Other tennis jobs took us to Garden City, Phillipsburg, Hoisington, Osage City, Andover, Leavenworth, and Louisburg.

Every tennis job starts with an on-site assessment. See what tennis court resurfacing involves and how long it takes.

Pickleball Court Projects in Kansas

The City of Goodland hired us for its pickleball courts, and we’ve done pickleball work in Concordia too. Across Kansas, the Kansas City area included, we put in new pickleball courts and turn tennis courts into pickleball courts. We can also add pickleball lines while resurfacing a tennis court.

Running Track Projects in Kansas

We offer running track resurfacing in Kansas. Our track jobs here range from a refresh in Tonganoxie to a full replacement at Garden City High School, where a new polyurethane track went in. At Ulysses High School, we stripped off the worn rubber, patched the base, and resurfaced it. The track at Hays High School and one in McPherson got a structural spray. Beyond those, our Kansas track jobs include St. John, Colby, Lewis, Quinter, Syracuse, Garnett, and Frankfort, plus runway work at Baldwin High School and in Girard, Ottawa, and Hutchinson.

Where We’ve Worked Across Kansas

Below is Kansas work we’ve completed, grouped by region, and the larger cities where we also take jobs. Wherever your court or track is in Kansas, our crews can get to it.

Kansas City Area

We resurfaced an 8-lane track in Tonganoxie. Across Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, and the rest of the Kansas side of the metro, we take on tennis court repair and construction as well as pickleball and running track work. We’ve also taken tennis court jobs in Leavenworth and Louisburg.

Lawrence and Eastern Kansas

In Lawrence, we’ve worked on the Prairie Park and Holcomb Park tennis and basketball courts and on other city parks. We did runway work at Baldwin High School and in Ottawa, tennis court jobs in Sabetha and Osage City, running track work in Garnett and Frankfort, and javelin runway work in Girard.

Wichita and Central Kansas

In McPherson, we applied a red structural spray across a track and its runways. In Hutchinson, we’ve worked on the city’s fairground tennis courts and done runway work. Elsewhere in the region, our jobs include tennis courts in Andover and Hoisington, a running track in St. John, pickleball courts in Concordia, and a high jump in Little River. Wichita itself is in our service area for courts and tracks.

Hays and Northwest Kansas

In Hays, our crews resurfaced the Hays High School track and also worked on the school’s new tennis courts. We’ve had more court and track jobs around town too. For the City of Goodland, the job was its pickleball courts. Running track jobs in Colby and Quinter and a tennis court job in Phillipsburg round out the region.

Garden City and Southwest Kansas

At Garden City High School, we replaced the old track with a new 13mm polyurethane surface, and we’ve had a tennis court job in Garden City as well. The new surface at Ulysses High School carries bright orange exchange zones in the school’s colors. Syracuse and Lewis have had running track work from our crews, and we’ve worked in Scott City too.

Common Questions From Kansas Facilities

Summer. Acrylic court coatings go down only on a dry court, with the surface at 60°F or more and an overnight low no lower than 60°F. NOAA normals put Wichita’s normal low at 60°F or higher from late May to mid-September, Topeka’s from late May to early September, and Goodland’s only from July 1 to August 16. Setting up the free on-site assessment well ahead of that window gives the job the best chance of fitting inside it.
