What Altitude, Sun, and Winter Do to Courts and Tracks

Sun and cold both work against Mountain West courts and tracks. High-altitude sun fades and dries out coatings, and big day-to-night temperature swings open cracks. Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming add freeze-thaw winters and spring snowmelt. In Arizona and New Mexico, monsoon downpours test the drainage.

Not every failure is the weather’s fault. At Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, Wyoming, the courts were failing because an earlier coating had gone down on a surface that wasn’t cleaned properly. We cleaned the surfaces, patched the damaged areas, and applied new color coatings.

Weather also sets the calendar.

“We can’t install coatings below 60 degrees or on damp surfaces. For northern states, that means work windows are much shorter, mainly summer.”

In Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, book the assessment well before summer so the job fits that window. In Arizona and New Mexico, coatings still need a dry surface of at least 60°F and nights that don’t drop below 60°F, so check the calendar early there too.

Common Questions From Mountain West Facilities

Summer in Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Acrylic court coatings can’t go down below 60°F or on a damp surface, and nights need to stay at 60°F or above, which keeps the northern states mainly to summer. Arizona and New Mexico follow the same rule, so book your free assessment early wherever you are.
