What Iowa’s Freeze-Thaw Winters Do to Courts and Tracks
Winter does the damage in Iowa. By NOAA normals, Des Moines averages about 82 days a year when the temperature swings across freezing, and Sioux City about 103. Water seeps into hairline cracks, freezes, and forces them wider, and cracks sealed without an engineered crack-bridging system can reopen by spring. Water left standing in low spots keeps the coating saturated.
At Waterloo West High School, years of use and weather had left eight tennis courts with extensive cracking, birdbaths, and worn coatings. Our crew repaired the cracks and birdbaths with the ARMOR Crack Repair System, then applied a Nova Sports acrylic resurfacer and two color coats. The whole job took 10 days.
The calendar is Iowa’s other constraint.
“We can’t install coatings below 60 degrees or on damp surfaces. For northern states, that means work windows are much shorter, mainly summer.”
Lance Laurent, President, Pro Track & Tennis

The 60°F limit covers the overnight low too. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give Des Moines about 278 nights a year at 60°F or colder, and Waterloo, Sioux City, and Dubuque more than 300 each. June, when the average overnight low first reaches 60°F, is also the wettest month in all four. Ask for your free assessment before June.

Pickleball Court Projects in Iowa
At Campbell Park in Strawberry Point, two unused tennis courts became four pickleball courts after ARMOR crack repair and a Nova Sports acrylic coating. We recoated the Sheridan Park pickleball courts in Eldridge, color-coated new pickleball courts at Stone Park in Des Moines, and striped one Waterloo West High School tennis court for pickleball. We’ve also worked on pickleball courts at Veterans Park in Dubuque and in Le Mars.

Running Track Projects in Iowa
Most track surfacing systems need a dry surface and at least 60°F, which sharply limits the season in northern states. Our running track resurfacing in Iowa includes Regina Catholic High School in Iowa City, where a worn latex track got a new basemat and black polyurethane structural spray. At I-35 High School in Truro, we restriped the track. Other Iowa track work includes Morningside University in Sioux City and schools in Marengo, Waterloo, Inwood, and Eldridge.

Multi-Purpose and Sport Court Projects in Iowa
Stone Park in Des Moines is now a multi-sport court hub. Our crews color-coated its new pickleball courts and a futsal court with a custom soccer logo, and refreshed the existing basketball court. At Evelyn K. Davis Park, also in Des Moines, we put a base color coat on newly laid concrete basketball courts to prepare them for a mural. We’ve also done basketball court work in Iowa City, Fort Dodge, Lenox, and Ida Grove.

Common Questions From Iowa Facilities
Mainly summer. We coat only a dry surface that’s 60°F or warmer, on days when the overnight low holds at 60°F or above. In Des Moines, NOAA normals put the average overnight low at 60°F or warmer from early June to early September, and in Waterloo from mid-June to late August. Even July averages about 4 nights of 60°F or colder in Des Moines and about 11 in Waterloo, so ask for your free on-site assessment early in the year.
Plan on 5 to 10 days on site for a tennis, pickleball, or multi-purpose court job. The eight tennis courts at Waterloo West High School took 10 days, crack repair included. Running track resurfacing takes 2 to 4 weeks. Rain or cold can stretch either one, since neither court coatings nor most track surfacing systems go down on a damp surface or below 60°F. Court coatings also need the overnight low at 60°F or above.
The ARMOR Crack Repair System, the crack repair Pro Track & Tennis uses as standard. At Campbell Park in Strawberry Point, our crew used it on cracks and birdbath damage before the courts were coated. The ARMOR membrane stays flexible in the crack instead of setting hard, so when freeze-thaw cycles shift the base, the repair is built to absorb that movement. On a heavily cracked court, ARMOR goes down at roughly 300 linear feet per day, and courts repaired with it get a 5-year warranty. It has limits. If the asphalt has deteriorated so far that it can’t be prepped, new coatings would fail within weeks or months, and the court needs a full rebuild. The on-site assessment will show whether yours has reached that point.
Anywhere in the state. Our completed Iowa work includes Des Moines, West Des Moines, Iowa City, Dubuque, Waterloo, Sioux City, Le Mars, Eldridge, Bettendorf, Mason City, and Marengo, along with towns from Strawberry Point to Shenandoah. We also serve Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Ames. Iowa is one of the 25+ states Pro Track & Tennis covers, and no job is handed to a subcontractor.
Yes, when the cracking is minor. Crack repair with ARMOR, our standard system, can be done on a track without resurfacing it. A worn-out track can still be patched and given a structural spray with new striping, and a mat that’s past saving calls for a full scrape and a new mat. Tracks generally need resurfacing every 8 to 12 years, and a free on-site assessment shows which of these your track needs.
