What Texas Heat and Clay Soil Do to Courts and Tracks
Heat and clay soil are hard on Texas courts and tracks. Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and El Paso each average more than 100 days a year at 90°F or hotter, and heat and sun fade coatings and make them brittle. Along I-35, Blackland Prairie clay shrinks and swells, so a crack in the base can work its way back up through a new surface. Standing water shortens coating life.
At Pueblo Viejo in El Paso, the desert climate had cracked the courts and faded the paint, and poor drainage left water pooling after heavy rain. We repaired the cracks, prepped the surface, put down a new acrylic resurfacer and topcoat, and restriped the courts.
Weather also sets the calendar.
“We can’t install coatings below 60 degrees or on damp surfaces. For northern states, that means work windows are much shorter, mainly summer.”
Lance Laurent, President, Pro Track & Tennis

Pueblo Viejo, El Paso, Texas, before resurfacing.
The same rule applies in Texas, and nights need to stay at 60°F or above. NOAA normals put Dallas-Fort Worth at 60°F or colder on about 195 nights a year, but almost never in June, July, or August. Book the assessment early and leave room in the calendar for rain.

Pickleball Court Projects in Texas
At Dill Dinkers in San Antonio, we surfaced five indoor pickleball courts on an existing concrete floor. In Baytown, near Houston, we put an acrylic surface and pickleball lines on new concrete courts. The sport courts we resurfaced in Smithville and Rising Star are set up for pickleball too, and in El Paso we’ve worked on the Skyline pickleball courts.

Running Track Projects in Texas
A track takes the same Texas heat as a court, spread over a much bigger surface. For running track construction in Texas, the soil under the base gets checked before anything is built, because clay soil moves. We’ve done running track work in Austin, Fort Worth, Red Oak, Stephenville, Nacogdoches, Blue Ridge, Idalou, White Deer, and Santa Rosa, and on middle school tracks in Corpus Christi.

Multi-Purpose and Sport Court Projects in Texas
We’ve worked on park basketball courts across El Paso. At Pacific Park, we repaired and coated a cracked concrete court, and at Pueblo Viejo we resurfaced the multi-purpose courts. In Smithville and Rising Star, we turned worn basketball courts into sport courts for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball. We’ve also done park basketball court work in White Settlement, and we resurface multi-sport courts in Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin.

Common Questions From Texas Facilities
In Texas, late spring through early fall is best for acrylic court coatings. They need a dry surface of at least 60°F and nights that don’t drop below 60°F. In Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, NOAA normals show almost no nights of 60°F or colder from June to August, while El Paso, Midland-Odessa, and Lubbock have more cool nights in May and September. Pro Track & Tennis takes tennis court, pickleball court, and running track work across Texas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Corpus Christi, and Lubbock. We’ve completed work from Texarkana to El Paso. It’s all part of the 25+ states we serve, and our own crews do every job.
Pro Track & Tennis treats cracks on Texas courts with the ARMOR Crack Repair System, our standard crack repair. It’s a flexible membrane built to absorb movement in the base, which matters where clay soil shrinks and swells. A crew installs about 300 linear feet a day, and on courts the repair carries a 5-year warranty. If the asphalt underneath is crumbling, no crack repair will hold, and we’ll tell you the court needs a rebuild.
Pro Track & Tennis projects in Texas include eight resurfaced tennis courts at Red Oak High School near Dallas, the courts at Giammalva Racquet Club in Spring near Houston, and tennis court work at Permian High School in Odessa and East Central High School in San Antonio. We surfaced five indoor pickleball courts at Dill Dinkers in San Antonio and resurfaced the cracked basketball surface for the City of Smithville. In El Paso, we’ve worked on the Skyline pickleball courts for the City of El Paso, and on the courts at Pacific Park and Pueblo Viejo. Our Texas running track work includes middle school tracks in Corpus Christi and tracks in Austin and Fort Worth.
Tennis court maintenance in Texas starts with keeping the court clean and dry. Dust and grit act like sandpaper in the heat, and water left standing on a court feeds algae and shortens coating life. Fading and chalking are early signs of a coating that’s wearing out, and a hardened surface loses grip. A free on-site assessment tells you whether the court can be resurfaced or needs a rebuild.
